Basophils (Exam 1) Flashcards
What are the physical characteristics of basophils?
darker blue/purple granules | cannot see nucleus clearly |
What dye do basophil granules stain with?
basic dye
What are some characteristics of old basophils?
less granules - can see nucleus clearer
What are 2 differential diagnoses of basophilic leukocytosis?
Chronic Myelocytic Leukemia | viral infections
Why does Chronic Myelocytic Leukemia occur with basophilic leukocytosis?
basophils = myeloid cell = overproduction of myeloid cell = at suspense of RBC and platelets > decrease in RBC and platelet production = bleeding and clotting problems
What is the lifespan of basophils in the BM?
7 days
What are basophils in the tissues called?
mast cells
What is the function of basophils?
allergic reactions
What are 2 things that basophils contain in their granules?
histamine | heparin
How do basophils release histamine?
Ag binds to IgE »_space;> conformational change »_space;> lysis and release of granules = release histamine
What are the 4 effects that histamine induces?
vasodilation | bronchiole constriction | drop in BP | increase in vessel permeability so water exits vessels = hives = itching
What is significant about IgE and its role in allergic reactions?
IgE = only Ab bound to mast cells bc it is cytophilic (like to adhere to cells)
What are the 2 factors that will elevate or reduce allergic reactions
quality of antigen | how much IgG is produced against the allergic Ag
