What is an enzyme and what happens when it’s denatured
Biological catalyst. Made of amino acids. Denatured - lost its shape/ structure so can’t form enzyme substrate complexes
What enzyme breaks down protein?
Protease
What enzyme breaks down fats
Lipase
What enzyme breaks down carbohydrates?
Amylase
Test for sugars, basic method and colour change
Benedict’s solution. Add a few drops of Benedict’s, heat/ heat in water bath -green to brick red positive
Test for starch, basic method, colour change
Iodine, drop of iodine, browny yellow to blue/black if positive
Test for protein , method , colour
Biuret solution, add 5-10 drops, blue to purple
Test for lipids/fats
Ethanol solution, add 3 drops shake, turns cloudy
