Transportstion B1 Flashcards
Osmosis
Osmosis is the movement of water molecules, from a higher concentration, to a lower concentration, through a partially permeable membrane.
Active transport
substance moves from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentrations, across a partially permeable membrane - requires energy
Diffusion
movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an
area of lower concentration, through a partially permeable membrane
Example of osmosis
Water moves by osmosis from a dilute solution in the soil to a concentrated solution in the root hair cell.
Example of active transport
Active transport is used to absorb mineral
ions into the root hair cells from more
dilute solutions in the soil.
Example of diffusion
Oxygen diffuses from the air in the alveoli into the blood in the capillaries. Carbon dioxide diffuses from
the blood in the capillaries into the air in the alveoli.
Is energy required for active transport, osmosis or diffusion?
Only active transport- energy released by respiration
Name 3 factors affecting diffusion
concentration, temperature, and surface area of the
membrane.
