Cell Differentiation Stems And Meristems Flashcards
What does it mean for a cell to be differentiated
The process by which a cell changes to become specialised
Where are plant stem cells found?
Meristems
Why are plant stem cells useful to the plant?
Unspecialised cells can differentiate to form specialised cells (eg. Palisade, root hair, xylem/phloem) to perform a function; eg. photosynthesis or water + sugar transportation
How are embryonic stem cells better than adult stem cells
Embryonic stem cells can differentiate into any type of cell we need. Adult some cells can only differentiate into a narrow range of cells. E.g. the stem cells in bone marrow can only differentiate into different types of blood cells.
What is the purpose of stem cells?
They are able to differentiate into specialised cells to perform a specific function/need. Eg. A nerve cell for animal cells
