Enzymes Flashcards
catalysts
A substance that increases the rate of reaction and is not changed by the reaction
Enzymes
Proteins that function as biological catalysts, each enzyme has a specific food that it works on.
Active sites
A region on an enzyme that binds to a protein or other substance during a reaction.
Binding sites
Binding site is a region on a protein (Enzyme) that binds to another molecule with specificity.
List properties of enzymes
- All enzymes are proteins
- Enzymes are made inactive by high temperatures, 3. Enzymes work best at a particular temperature (37c),
- Enzymes work best at a particular pH,
- Enzymes are catalysts,
- Enzymes are specific for one chemical reaction.
Enzyme denatured
When the substrate no longer fits in the active site.
Enzymes in plants
Enzymes are also present in plants, for ex: germinating seeds, since plants store starch, when the seed soaks up water, the amylase is activated which breaks sown the starch into maltose which is then sent to the embryo to provide energy for growth.
Lock and key mechanism
When a molecule of a substance is fitted perfectly into the enzymes’s active site
