Enzymes Flashcards
Amylase
.Catalyses reaction of carbohydrates into sugar
. Extracellular
.Present in saliva
Catalase
. Extracellular
. Turns toxic hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) into water and oxygen
Trypsin
. Extracellular Enzyme
. Breaks down proteins into amino acids
. Present in digestive system
Cofactors
Non protein substance needed for enzyme activity to occur
Coenzyme
Organic cofactors which briefly binds onto enzyme helping it bind onto a substrate
Eg cl- in amylase
Activator
An inorganic metal ion which temporarily binds to the enzymes alerting its shape making the reaction more feasible
Prosthetic Group
Binds to an enzyme to help it Function. Is always present (permanent)
. Eg Zn2+ is the prosthetic group of carbonic anhydrase
