Cell Surface Membrane Flashcards
Phospholipid
Allows lipid-soluble substances through water and prevents water-soluble substances passing through
Glycoprotein
A branching carbohydrate portion of a protein which acts as a recognition site for chemicals eg hormones
Glycolipid
Acts as a recognition site eg for cholera toxins
Channel protein
Special arrangement of proteins embedded in a cell providing a hydrophilic passageway for water and small, polar ions
Carrier proteins
Facilitates diffusion of molecules across the cell membrane
Cholesterol
Used for stability/flexibility
Receptor Sites
A protein on a cell wall that binds with specific molecules so that they can be absorbed into the cell
Enzymes and coenzymes
An enzyme is a molecule that speeds up the ROR. A coenzyme enhances the action of the enzyme
Intrinsic proteins
Proteins spanning the bilayer . Can act as carriers for water-soluble substances
Extrinsic Proteins
Act as receptors for hormones and neurotransmitters or involved in cell recognition
