Enzymes Flashcards
Enzyme
A biological catalyst of a protein nature that speed up reactions without being used up themselves
Substrate
The substance that an enzyme acts on
Product
The substance that the enzyme forms
Solar energy
Energy from the sun
Cellular energy
Energy stored in the bonds of biomoleciles
Catalyst
A substance that speeds up a reaction, without itself being used up in the reaction
Active site
The part of the enzyme that combines with the substrate
Bio- processing
The use of enzyme controlled reactions to produce a product
Denatured enzyme
An enzyme that has lost its shape and can no longer function
Immobilisation/ immobilised enzymes
Where enzymes are attached to each other or an inert substance and can be used repeatedly
Enzyme specificity
Each enzyme will react with only one particular substrate
Optimum pH
The oh value which an enzyme works best
Catalase
An enzyme that is found in liver, celery and potatoes
Optimum temperature
The temperature at which the enzyme will work best
Ribosomes (enzyme chapter)
Where enzymes are produced (cell organelle)
