Cell Division/ Continuity Flashcards
Cell continuity
All cells develop from pre - existing cells
Haploid
A haploid cell has one set of chromosomes
Diploid
A diploid has two sets of chromosomes
Haploid number in humans
n = 23
Diploid number
2n = 46
Cell cycle
Describes the life of a cell
Interphase
The stage where the cell is not dividing
Chromosome
Collided thread of DNA which forms genes and protein
Gene
A section of DNA that contains the instructions for the formation of a protein
Mitosis
A form of nuclear division in which one nucleus divides to form two nuclei, each containing identical sets of chromosomes
Cytokinesis
The splitting of the cell in two after mitosis has replicated the nucleus
Animal cells
The cleavage furrow cell pinches inwards to give two daughter cells
Plant cells
Cell plate - the wall grows across to give two daughter cells
Cancer
Certain cells lose their ability to control the rate of mitosis
Centromere
The point at which the chromosomes are attached in a double - stranded chromosome
