Imagery
Use of figurative language to describe objects, in a way that appears to our physical senses
Hyperbole
An exaggeration of ideas for the sake of emphasis
Verbal Irony
The use of words to mean something different then they appear
Situational Irony
The difference between what is expected to happen and what actually happens
Dramatic Irony
When the audience is aware of something of which the character is not
Simile
A figure of speech that makes a comparison using “like” or “as” and sometimes “then”.
Alliteration
A number of words having the same first letter or first sound that occurs when close together in a series
Onomatopoeia
A word which mimics the sound it represents
Metaphor
A figure of speech that makes a direct comparison between two different things
Connotation
the implied meaning of a word
Personification
giving human traits to a idea thing or animal
Allusion
reference to something with literacy work, ex. his smile is like kryptonite
Paradox
A silly statement that makes sense, ex. nobody goes to the pizza place its too crowded
Oxymoron
Two opposite ideas joined to create an effect
