10/10 EARTH SCIENCE EXAM Flashcards
density formula
D=m/v
volume formula
V=m/d
mass formula
M=v x d
what is mass?
the amount of matter contained in a given object, mass is measured in grams (g)
what is volume?
the amount of space an object takes up, measured in cubic centimeters (cc) or millimeters (mL)
what causes density to change?
density can change if temperature and pressure is affected
an increase in temperature causes?
an increase in temperature causes a DECREASE in density
an increase in pressure causes?
an increase in pressure causes an INCREASE in density
what happens to denser materials?
DENSE materials tend to sink towards the Earth’s core, LESS dense materials tend to sink towards the Earth’s surface
what is the MOST dense part of Earth?
EARTH’S INNER CORE
what is the LEAST dense part of Earth?
THE OUTER ATMOSPHERE (very light gases there)
what way does longitude lines go?
up and down, LONG. they MEASURE distance east to west, but RUN north to south
what way does latitude lines go?
sideways, think of a climbing a ladder. they MEASURE distance north to south, but RUN east to west
what is the prime meridian?
the prime meridian has a longitude of 0 degrees and runs through Greenwich England. the prime meridian splits the world into the eastern and western hemispheres
what is the equator?
the equator splits the northern and southern hemisphere, the equator has a latitude of 0 degrees.
what comes first longitude or latitude?
LATITUDE, think of climbing a ladder
what is polaris?
polaris is the North Star, polaris sits directly above the north pole. if you see polaris you are closer north
contour lines?
an isoline which connects points of equal ELEVATION or altitude, measures steepness
isothern?
an isoline which connects points of equal TEMPERATURE
isobar?
an isoline which connects points of equal PRESSURE
isoseismal line?
an isoline which connects points of equal EARTHQUAKE INTENSITIES
gradient?
G= change in field value (cifv) / distance (d)
isoline?
lines on maps which are drawn to connect points of equal value
topographic map?
a map that displays forms and features of land surfaces
what is the equatorial diameter?
the equator
what is the polar diameter?
the prime meridian
% error equation?
dfav / av x 100
why does temperature affect density?
heating a substance causes the molecules to spread further apart, if warmer temperature density is decreased
why does pressure affect density?
the object will be compressed, if increase in pressure density is increased
what is the international dateline?
an imaginary line which separates marks different time zones, one side is monday, the other side is tuesday
