Engine Failure Flashcards
1
Q
ENGINE FIRE OR FAILURE FROM HIGH LEVEL (2W)
A
- THROTTLE - IDLE
- CONVERT EXCESS SPEED TO HEIGHT
- SMOKE OR FIRE - CHECK
If signs of fire exist: - EXECUTE EMERGENCY SHUTDOWN CHECKLIST
- HOT AND COLD AIR KNOBS - CLOSED
- CANOPY VENTS - ARROW AFT
If fire continues: - EXECUTE AIRCRAFT ABANDONMENT CHECKLIST
If time permits and no engine fire evident: - MIXTURE - FULL RICH
- IGNITION - BOTH
- BOOST PUMP - LOW
- FUEL COCK - ON
- FUEL CONTENTS - CHECK
- TEMPERATURES AND PRESSURES - CHECK
- THROTTLE - CHECK RESPONSE
If time permits and still no response: - THROTTLE - IDLE
- EMERGENCY BOOST PUMP - ON
- THROTTLE - CHECK RESPONSE
Warning: Do not attempt to restart an engine that has been shutdown because of an engine fire or mechanical failure.
Warning: The throttle must be closed as operation of the emergency boost pump with full throttle and low RPM may result in a rich cut.
If no response: - EXECUTE FORCED LANDING CHECKLIST
2
Q
AIR START (1C : 1N)
A
- FUEL COCK - ON
- THROTTLE - OPEN 1 CM
- PROPELLER - FULL INCREASE
- MIXTURE - FULL RICH
- BOOST PUMP - PRIME
- IGNITION - START
If the engine fails to start:
IGNITION - START, WHILE OPENING THROTTLE PROGRESSIVELY TO FULL OPEN
Caution: Ensure that the ignition/starter switch does not spring past BOTH when released.
Note: Increasing the airspeed to 155 KIAS may also turn the propeller. However, this technique uses about 1,500 ft of height.
3
Q
FORCED LANDING CHECKLIST (1C : 1N)
A
Caution: During practice forced landings the CHT should be monitored regularly. The engine should be warmed as necessary to maintain CHT above 115 C 1. EXECUTE EMERGENCY SHUTDOWN CHECKLIST 2. HARNESSES - LOCKED AND TIGHT 3. CANOPY - JETTISON IF DITCHING 4. FLAP - AS REQUIRED 5. ALTERNATOR - OFF When flap is in desired position: 6. MASTER - OFF Note: If required make an emergency call before master is switched OFF. Master switch should be left ON for a forced landing at night and switched OFF after landing.
