Energy Systems - FOOD/FUEL Flashcards
What are the 3 basic nutrients in foods that provide us with energy?
Carbs
Fats
Protein
What is an example of a food with
- carbs
- fat
- protein
Carbs -pasta
Fat - butter
Protein - fish
During digestion, what is each nutrient (carbs, fats, protein) broken down to?
Carbs - glucose
Fats - fatty acids
Protein - amino acids
What is each broken down unit stored as?
Carbs - stored as glucose, glycogen and excess as adipose tissue
Fats - stored as fatty acids, triglycerides and adipose tissue
Protein - stored as muscle and amino acid
What is each broken down unit stored as?
Carbs - blood, muscle and liver, around the body
Fats - blood, muscle, around the body
Protein - around the body
What is our preferred fuel source during exercise?
Carbs
How long will CHO stores last?
90 mins of exercise
What is our preferred fuel source at rest?
Fats
When else (other than at rest) are fats used?
Prolonged sub maximal exercise
What is the difference between using CHO and fat as a fuel?
CHO uses less chemical reactions and therefore is required during exercise as it is quicker
Fats use more chemical reactions so they take longer
When is protein used as a fuel?
When carbs and fats run out
-> long duration exercises
What does food contain?
Nutrients
