Circukatory System - BLOOD VESSELS Flashcards

1
Q

What are the main distinguishing features between arteries and veins?

A
ARTERIES
- carry blood away from heart
- thick elastic muscular walls
- no valves
- high pressure blood flow
VEINS
- carry blood to the heart
- thin non elastic walls
- valves present
- low pressure blood flow

Q

Explain he role of valves in the veins

A

Valves only allow movement of blood in one direction.valves are present in veins to help blood travel against gravity toward the heart and prevent backward flow of blood

Q

What is the main role of the capillaries?

A

Capillaries are sights for the transfer of oxygen and other nutrients from the blood stream to other tissues in the body; they also collect Co2 waste material and fluids for return to the veins

Q

What is systolic blood pressure?

A

When your heart beats, it contracts and pushes blood through the arteries to the rest of your body, this force creates pressure to the arteries. This is called systolic blood pressure
Normal = 120
(Top number)
