energy change Flashcards
what are exothermic reactions
transference of reactants energy to the surroundings
surroundings temp will increase
what are endothermic reactions
tranfering of energy from the surroundings to the reactants/products
causes a fall in temp of the surroundings
what does a reaction profile for an exothermic reaction look like
products have a lower energy level than reactants as theyve been tranferred to the surroundings
the energy change is the amount released to surroundings, heating them
what does a reaction profile for an endothermic reaction look like
products are higher than reactants as they have gained energy from the surroundings
whats activation energy
amount of energy needed before the colliding particles have enough energy for a reaction to take place
on the graph thing is like the hump that goes upwards
what kind of process is bond breaking
endothermic as energy has to be supplied to have the activation energy to break the bonds
what kind of process is bond forming
exothermic idk why
how to decide if the reaction is endo or exothermic
sometimes the energy released by new bonds is greater than that taken in to break them which makes it exothermic
and vice versa
give two endothermic reactions
thermal decomposition
citric acid and sodium
two exothermic reactions
neutralisation
