Energy & cellular metabolism Flashcards
What is reaction coupling?
This is where energy is released from one reaction is used to drive another reaction, often this energy comes from the ATP phosphate bond
Define specificity
the binding site of the enzyme and the substrate have to be complementary in order for that binding and a reaction to occur
Define competition
is where different ligands or substrates will compete with each other for the same enzyme binding site.
Define Saturation
is the state where all enzymes are bound to a ligand or the enzymes are saturated with the ligand
What are the 4 categories of enzymatic reactions?
- Oxidation reduction reactions
- hydrolysis dehydration reactions
- Addition subtraction exchange reactions
- Litigation reactions
define catabolism:
the breakdown of larger biomolecules (energy is released from high energy bonds)
define anabolism:
the creation of large biomolecules (transfer of energy into covalent bonds of macromolecules
How do cells regulate metabolism?
- Controlling enzyme concentration
- Producing modulators that change reaction rates
- using 2 different enzymes to catalyze reversible reactions
- compartmentalizing enzymes within cellular organelles
- maintain an optimum ratio of ATP to ADP
