Endocrine System Pt. 2 Flashcards
What type of stimuli causes ADH release
Humoral because the osmotic pressure in the blood signals that we need more water
What stimuli causes OXT release?
Hormonal because our hormones help baby get out with positive feedback and neural because suckling causes more release
What hormones are released by the anterior pituitary gland?
FLAT PIG
What is FSH and what it do?
Follicle stimulating hormone;
Stimulates male spermatogenesis and female oocyte maturation.
Inhibited by inhibin by cells in testes and ovaries
What is LH and what it do?
Luteinizing hormone;
Stimulates male testes to produce testosterone and female ovaries to produce estrogen (which cause secondary sexual development)
A surge in LH causes ovulation
What is ACTH and what it do?
Adrenocorticotropic Hormone;
Corticotropin releasing hormone causes pituicytes to release ACTH into capillaries that drain into cerebral venous system
Travels through systemic circulation to adrenal cortex stress hormone- cortisol
What is TSH and what it do?
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone;
Regulates metabolism by the hypothalamus looking at energy stores in the body.
What is PRL and what it do?
Prolactin;
Stimulates mammary gland development and milk production in females
Inhibited by PIH (tyrosine derivative)
What is GH and what it do?
Growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) leads to release of Growth hormone which stimulates tissue growth and metabolism
Somatostatin decreases GH and opposes GHRH
