Endocrine System Flashcards
What are some of the Endocrine glands?
Hypothalamus, Pituitary, Thyroid, Parathyroid, Andrenal, Pancreas, Gonads (ovaries and testicles)
What do endocrine glands send to different parts of the body?
Chemical signals, also known as hormones.
How do hormones travel through the body?
Via the bloodstream
What do hormones signal cells to do?
Release another hormone, release or take in nutrients, or change the speed at which the body makes certain proteins.
What does the endocrine system do?
Adjust levels of nutrients in blood, excrete excess nutrients, helps the body respond to its environment (body temperature, blood sugar, etc), and directs growth and development (height and metabolism)
How are glands linked to the nervous system?
Hypothalamus
What is the main role of the hypothalamus?
Direct the activity of the pituitary gland.
it can cause it to make and release its chemical signals via chemicals called releasing hormones.
What two parts is the pituitary gland made up of?
Anterior (front) and Posterior (back) pituitary
What term is commonly used to describe adrenaline?
Epinephrine
What hormone stimulates the gonads?
