Q

What are 3 ways hormones are regulated?

A
  1. tropic hormones stimulate other glands to secrete their hormones. 2. respond directly to changes in the internal environment. 3. nervous system stimulates glands directly.

15
Q

Describe the structure of the pituitary gland

A

master gland located under the hypophysis. 75% anterior, 25% posterior. The hypothalamus is where the hormones are actually made, but the infundibulum connects the two together.

16
Q

How is oxytocin controlled?

A

With a positive feedback loop

17
Q

What is common condition is caused by hyper secretion of ADH

A

diabetes insipidus

18
Q

What is another name for the anterior pituitary?

A

adenohypophysis

19
Q

How is the anterior pituitary controlled?

A

by hormones released by the hypothalamus

20
Q

What is a tropic hormone?

A

hormones that stimulate other organs to produce their hormones.

21
Q

When is hGH secreted?

A

after sleep. Peaks in adolescence

22
Q

hypo secretion of hGH?

23
Q

hyper secretion of hGH?

A

acromegaly

24
Q

What does prolactin do?

A

males: decreases LH production. Females: responsible for milk production and letdown

25
What is melanocyte stimulating hormone tied with and what does it do?
adrenocorticotropic hormone. Causes dark skin color and leads to Addison's disease
26
What is iodine needed for in the body?
to produce T3 and T4 in the thyroid.
27
Hyper secretion of T3 and T4?
graves disease: exopthalmos and goiter
28
hypo secretion of T3 and T4?
Hashimoto's, cretinism, myxedema
29
Is calcitonin critical in calcium balance?
no. as long as parathyroid is functional.
30
3 parts of Adrenal Cortex?
1. Zona glomerulosa: produces aldosterone 2. Zona Fasciculata: cortisol 3. Zona Zeticularis: androgens
31
Hypo secretion of cortisol?
cushings syndrome
32
Type 1 diabetes
under production of insulin
33
Type 2 diabetes
lack of insulin receptors
34
What is the 3rd eye?
pineal gland
35
What produces thymosins?
Thymus gland
36
What produces erythropoietin?
kidneys
