Endocrine System Flashcards
What are the 10 glands of the endocrine system from top to bottom?
1) Hypothalamus
2) Pineal Gland
3) Pituitary Gland
4) Parathyroid Gland
5) Thyroid Gland
6) Adrenal Glands
7) Pancreas
8) Kidneys
9) Ovaries
10) Testes
Hypothalamus
Located in the brain
Main function to control the pituitary gland.
Hormones produced: Dopamine, Thyrotropin-releasing hormone, & growth- hormone)
Pituitary Gland
Located at the base of the brain
Produces hormones which control growth and sexual functioning
Hormones produced: Oxytocin, Thyroid-stimulating hormone, & growth hormone)
Pineal Gland
Located in brain
Hormone produced: Melatonin (induces drowsiness & lowers body temperature)
Thyroid Gland
Located in the neck just below the Adam’s Apple
Controls protein production and the body’s use of energy.
Regulated by Pituitary Gland
Hormones produced: T3 & Thyroxine
Parathyroid Glands
4 glands located at back of the thyroid
Hormone produced: Parathyroid hormone (regulates calcium & phosphate levels in body)
Pancreas
Located behind the stomach
Releases hormones that regulate digestion & blood-sugar levels
Hormones produced: Insulin, Glucagon, Somatostatin
Adrenal Glands
Located atop the kidneys
Adrenal Cortex releases Cortisol & Androgens (testosterone)
Adrenal Medulla releases Adrenaline, Noradrenaline, & Dopamine (regulates fight or flight)
Testes
Hormones produced: Testosterone & Estradiol
