Endocrine Dysfunction Flashcards
What cause endocrine disease
Overproduction of hormone (tumour)
Underproduction of a hormone (destruction of endocrine tissue)
Malfunctioning receptors
Hormonal pathway disrupted
What is a primary endocrine disease
An issue with the endocrine organ itself
What is Cushing disease
Hyperadrenocorticism - excessive cortisol production
What are the 2 categories in Cushing disease
Pituitary dependent - excessive ACTH
Adrenal dependent - usually due to adenocarcinomas
What is iatrogenic hyperadrencorticism
Excess exogenous administration of cortisol
What are the functions of cortisol
Metabolic effects: gluconeogenisis
Lipolysis
Protein degradation
Na/ Water retention
PTH release
Osteoclast activity
Inhibit FSH, LH, TSH, GH release
Inhibit calcium re absorption
Suppresses immune system
What is Addison’s disease
Hypoadrenocorticism
What are the signs of hypoadrenocorticism
Weight loss
Hypoglycaemic
Hyperpigmentation - due to High ACTH
What is the function of Parathyroid hormone
Cause calcium mobilisation from bone when blood Ca levels are low
And calcium re absorption from the DCT
What causes primary hyperparathyroidism
Tumours in the parathyroid gland
What causes secondary hyperparathyroidism
Chronic renal disease
What causes hypoparathyroidism
Iatrogenic removal of parathyroid gland
What is panhypopituitarism
Reduction in pituitary hormone due to a tumour inflammation that destroys tissue.
What is Equine Cushing’s disease
Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction
(Increased secretion of hormones, but mainly ACTH)
