Endocrine Flashcards
What does Insulins do?
Promotes absorption of glucose from the blood
What do insulins treat?
Diabetes mellitus, usually type 1
What are two examples of insulin?
Insulin lispro, insulin glaring, insulin aspart
What does Gliclazide do?
Protects human pancreatic beta-cells from hyperglycaemia-induced apoptosis
Prevents accumulation of fat in arteries- type 2
What does Gliclazide treat?
Diabetes mellitus- type 2
What does Metformin do?
Reduce hepatic glucose production (gluconeogenesis)
increase glucose uptake in skeletal muscle
Reduce carbohydrate absorption
Increase fatty acid oxidation
Reduce LDL and VLDL
What does Metformin treat?
Type 2 diabetes
What doe Pioglitazone do?
Modulates transcription of insulin-sensitive genes
Reduces hepatic glucose output
Increases glucose uptake into muscles
What does Pioglitazone treat?
Diabetes mellitus- type 2
What does Gliptins do?
Inhibit dipeptidylpeptidase-4 (DPP-4), thus lowering blood glucose
What does Gliptins treat?
Diabetes mellitus- type 2
What are two examples of Gliptins?
sitagliptin, vildagliptin
What does Glucagon do?
Increases blood glucose and causes breakdown of fat and protein
Stimulates glycogen synthesis and glucose oxidation (opposite of insulin)
What does Glucagon treat?
Hypoglycaemia in unconscious patients and acute cardiac failure
What does Levothyroxine do?
Regulates body’s energy and metabolism
