Endocrine Flashcards
Endocrine System
2nd system of communication in our body they differ between the type of communication between cells because it takes longer and configures development through hormones
Aden/o
Gland
Adren/o
ad+renal gland
Crin/o
to secrete
Gonad/o
Sex gland
Hormon/o
To set in motion, unchanging
Endocrine
Secretes hormone directly into the bloodstream
Exocrine
Release through the cellular wall/ sweat gland
Pancreat/o
Sweetbread, pancreas
Thyr/o
Shield, Thyroid
Thyroid/o
Resembling a shield, Thyroid
Endocrine System
Works with nervous system
Primary Organs
Pituitary gland (brain) Master gland-thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)
Thyroid Gland
Neck
Adrenal glands
Kidneys
ACTH
- Adrenal Corticotropic Hormone
- Acts on adrenal glands
- Releases: Cortisol: Glucose which controls regulation of metabolism, BP
- Aldosterone-pH balance
Homeostasis
The tendency to maintain a stable, relatively constant internal environment
Hormones
Changes cell function
HGH
- Human growth hormone
- Development of long bone and structures
Hypercalcemia
Too much calcium in the blood
Luteinizing Hormone (LH) Follicle Simulating Hormone (FSH)
- Development of oocytes (eggs) in females (ovulation) and the creation of sperm in males and releases estrogen
- Acts to trigger gonads.
Prolactin
Lactation by progesterone
Hyposecretion
Can result from an injury or infection, or from an inherited disorder or a tumor
Hypersecretion
May arise due to an inherited disease or a tumor
