Pharmacology and presentation of Prednisolone and Prednisone?
5mg or 20mg Prednisone Tablets
5mg/ml Prednisolone Syrup
Prednisone is metabolised to Prednisolone in the liver. Prednisolone is a cortico-steroid with anti-inflammatory and immuno-suppressive actions. Inhibits production of inflammatory mediators (prostaglandins and leukotrienes) resulting in a reduced immune and inflammation response.
Indicators of Prednisolone and Prednisone?
- Bronchospasm associated with asthma or COPD
- Croup
- Minor allergy associated with rash
- Prominent rash associated with anaphylaxis after all systemic signs of anaphylaxis have resolved
Contraindications of Prednisolone and Prednisone?
- Known severe allergy
Cautions of Prednisolone and Prednisone?
- Age less than 5 years, with asthma
Side Effects of Prednisolone and Prednisone?
- Fatigue
- Sodium and Water Retention
- GI Reflux
Dosing Regimes of Prednisolone and Prednisone?
- 40mg for an Adult
- Paediatrics 1mg per kg
