Pharmacology and presentation of Prednisolone and Prednisone?

A

5mg or 20mg Prednisone Tablets
5mg/ml Prednisolone Syrup

Prednisone is metabolised to Prednisolone in the liver. Prednisolone is a cortico-steroid with anti-inflammatory and immuno-suppressive actions. Inhibits production of inflammatory mediators (prostaglandins and leukotrienes) resulting in a reduced immune and inflammation response.

  • Bronchospasm associated with asthma or COPD
  • Croup
  • Minor allergy associated with rash
  • Prominent rash associated with anaphylaxis after all systemic signs of anaphylaxis have resolved
