Pharmacology and presentation of Ibuprofen?
A
200mg Tablet or 20mg/ml syrup
Ibuprofen is a NSAID, predominantly used as an analgesic. Inhibits prostaglandin synthetase, reducing prostaglandin production and causing a reduction in inflammation, pain and fever.

Indicators of Ibuprofen?
A
- Mild pain (usually combined with paracetamol) particularly headache and soft tissue/musculo-skeletal pain
- Can be administered with other analgesics in moderate to severe pain particularly during long transports, to reduce the need of subsequent analgesia and improve pain relief.

Contraindications of Ibuprofen?
A
- Known Severe Allergy
- 3rd Trimester of Pregnancy

Cautions of Ibuprofen?
Oral, Time, Baby, Breath, 3x Bleeding 3x Renal
A
- Ibuprofen taken within the last 4hrs, unless less than the ambulance prescribed dose
- Abdominal pain particularly if unwell or vomiting
- Age greater than or equal to 75. Particularly in the presence of illness, infection or dehydration. Due to possibly worsening of renal impairment.
- Dehydration or shock, due to worsening of renal impairment
- Known Renal impairment
- Known Bleeding disorder, due to increased risk of bleeding
- Clinically significant bleeding
- Taking Warfarin as it displaces its binding and increases its activity.
- Known worsening of bronchospasm from NSAID
- Pregnancy

Side Effects of Ibuprofen?
A
- Renal Impairment
- Increased bleeding time
- Chronic administration can lead to: indigestion, GI ulceration and GI bleeding

Dosing Regimes of Ibuprofen?
A
- 600mg for Adults above 80kg, 400mg for less than 80kg
Paediatrics
- <1year (5kg) = 50mg syrup
- 1year (10kg) = 100mg syrup or tablet
- 2-5 years (20kg) = 150mg syrup or 100mg tablet
- 6-10 years (30kg) = 200mg syrup or tablet
- 11-13 years (40kg) = 300mg syrup or tablet
