First Stage Labor
Dilation
Last 8-10 hours (beginning of true labor–> complete cervical dilation)
Contractions at regular intervals, lasting 30-60 seconds at first contractions are 10-20 minutes apart
Braxton-Hicks contraction (False Labor)
Second Stage Labor
Expulsion
Begins with Complete Cervical Dilation–> ends with delivery of baby
Infant moves through vagina &a is born
Contractions closer together; 2-3 minutes apart, lasting 60-90 seconds
Typically lasts 50-60 minutes
Third Stage Labor
Placental
Begins following delivery of fetus & ends with expulsion of placenta
Placenta usually delivered 5-20 minutes after baby
Small Intestine
Tubelike structure beginning at the end of the stomach; ending at Large Intestine
Digestive function is to absorb nutrients from intestinal contents
Located in lower quadrants
Stomach
Saclike, stretchable pouch located below the diaphragm
Receives food from esophagus
Enables digestion by secreting a specialized fluid to aid in the breakdown & absorption of food
Located Primary in left Upper Quadrant, partially in Right Upper Quadrant
Gallbladder
Pear-shaped sac that lies on the underneath right side of the liver
Holds bile which aids in the digestion of fats
Located in the RUQ
Uterus
Pear shaped organ that contains fetus
Top Portion- fundus
Middle Portion- body/corpus
Narrow-Tapered Neck- Cervix
3 Layers:
Endometrium-inner most lining
Myometrium- thick middle layer
Perimetrium- serous membrane that partially covers the corpus of the uterus
Pancreas
Gland composed of many lobes & ducts
Aids in digestion & regulates carbohydrate metabolism
Located in both RUQ & LUQ; just behind stomach
Poison (define)
Any substance that impairs health or causes death by its chemical action when it enters the body
Lighting Strike (effect on cardiovascular system)
Asystole or ventricular fibrillation
Irregular pulse

Believe these people may harm them
S/S:
Detached Aloof Unpredictable
Antagonistic Hypersensitive
Defensive Argumentative
May exhibit aggressive behavior
Schizophrenia
Chronic mental illness in which a patient does not return to his or her premorbid level of functioning
S/S: Distortions of speech/thought Social withdrawal Catatonic behavior Lack of emotional expressiveness Hallucinations
Whiplash Injury
Neck is hyperextended & the anterior Spinal ligaments are stretched/torn
Anxiety

Cavitation
Cavity in the body tissues formed by a pressure wave resulting from kinetic energy from the bullet

Routes of Exposure
Ingestion: most common route

Injection: typically Edema at site of injection
