Emotion and Stress Flashcards

1
Q

limbic system

A

structures in brain that control emotion and memory

  • hippo HAT ( hypothalamus, , amygdala, thalamus)
  • regulates atomic and endocrine function in response to emotional stimuli

Q

3 elements of emotion

A

physiological response (HR, BP, breathing) , behaviour response (body language, facial expression), cognitive response (subjective interpretation of the feeling being expressed)

Q

hippocampus

A

short term memory into long term mem

  • destroyed hippo –> long mess intake but can’t form any new long term ones

6
Q

what does emotional memory do?

A

storage of the actual feelings of emotion associated with the event, when experincing a similar event later on, we retrieve from here

7
Q

explicit memory to conscious memory

A

the memory of experiencing the actual emotion: remembering that you were happy ( memories about the emotions) rather the stored emotions ( the implicit does the actual emotion storing

Q

left vs right prefrontal cortex

A

the left has more positive emotions and the right is more negative emotions

Q

James-lange theory

A

emotions follow directly from bodily responses- person does not activley interpret their bodily responses in order to figure outthe emotion
- stimulus results in physiooical arousal whihc eads to secondary response which is an emotion

Q

Cannon-bard theory

A

physiological response and feeling emotion happen at the same time
- hold cat = event –> sensory information sent to both SNS and the cortex simultaneously by the thalmus

Q

schacter-singer theory

A

both arousal and labeling of the arousal based on the eviroment that one is in ( dinner party, lost ect) must occur in order for an emotionto be expereineced
- have to analyze the enviroment in relation to NS arousal

event holding cat–> physiological response –> identify the reason for the NS –> emotion

I am happy bc my heart is racing and everyone else is happy

19
Q

stress

A

or response to a stressor - less from the actual event and more from assesment of those events (appraisal)

20
Q

primary apprasial

A

initial evaluation - focus of the actual threat and subjectivly evaluate the situation;

3 responses:

  • irrelevant
  • benigh-positive
  • stressful

if it is negative (stresful) move on the 2 appraisal

21
Q

2nd apprasial

A

evaluating if organism can cope

evaluating:

  • harm; what has already been done
  • threat; what futre damage could be caused
  • challenge; how can the situation be overcome or countered
22
Q

stressors are classified as

A

causing distress (negative) or causing eustress (positive)

  • while even eustress is positive, it causes one to change life and any event that causes change adds stress
23
Q

stress evel can be measured by

A

“life change units” in a system called the social readjustment rating scale

24
Q

general adaptation syndrome

A

3 distinct stages

  • alarm
  • resitence stage
  • exhaustion stage
25
Q

alarm stage

A

activation of the SNS

- hypo–> ACTH, adrenal gland to release cortisol

26
Q

resistence

A

constant high levels of hormones, keep every high to keep fighting

27
Q

exhaustion

A

stress response gets damaged, more susectable to illness, leads to burn out
