Emotion Flashcards
Emotions originate in the PNS and the CNS then interprets them
event > physiological arousal > interpret physiology > emotion
James-Lange theory
Argues visceral responses are slower than emotions
event > emotion OR
event > physiology > emotion
Cannon-Bard theory
Facial muscles may feed back and influence emotional experience
Facial feedback hypothesis
Activates when we see facial movements of others and sends feedback to help understand how other person feels (empathy)
Mirror neuron system
Damaged right somatosensory cortex
Causes inability to recognize and identify facial expressions of emotions
Some ppl with blindness caused by damage to V1 can recognize or sense facial expressions of emotion
Affective blindsight
Downer experiment
Lesions left hem in a monkey
When he looked out of the right eye, there was no aggressive reaction
Only had aggressive response when info went to right side
Animals with damage to Amygdala don’t fear danger and can’t distinguish between food/other items
Kulver-Bucy syndrome
Mind and body are separate; emotion disrupts reason
Descarte’s theory of emotion
Gut reactions eliminate half of the possible choices, then reasoning slowly slobs through remaining choices
Damasio’s theory
Emotions facilitate rather than interfere with decision making
Somatic marker hypothesis
Decision making mediated by:
Ventromedial PFC, Amygdala, insular and somatosensory cortices
Iowa gambling task
Decks A and B: immediate gains large but delayed penalties larger
Decks C and D: immediate gains smaller but future losses smaller
VMPFC-lesions patients select more cards from the disadvantageous decks bc the anticipation of a loss is diminished
Myopia for future consequences
VMPFC-lesioned patients don’t learn to expect dread or punishment
