Emergency of the Day Flashcards
- The aircraft departs during BFM while using an unusually high base height, what are your actions?
SPIN RECOVERY
- Comm?
- Ballistic vs Breakout?
- Flight path?
- Other formation members ht/eject call if still out of control
- Application of in/out spin aileron can create large side slip angles or even invert the spin and hence is prohibited
- It can take up to 5000 ft to pull out from the dive once recovery has been achieved
- Recovery achieved when:
◦Rotation stopped
◦Speed increasing
◦Aircraft responding normally to controls.
- Wx overcast at 300ft, Leuchars IFR, Runway 13.
At 90kts hear DC Bus Tie open
What are your actions?
ABORT
Considerations:
- Amend your T/O emergency brief to cater for the wx
- DC bus tie open vs Leuc transit? i.e. Low cloud base – Gen / HUD
- APU caption during formation wind up
APU FIRE
- Make radio call to ATC before egress
- Other ac move clear
- Warn other occupant if operating MDC
- Pairs T/O RW19 as #2, you see a flock of birds pass between the formation.
You abort at 130kts but are approaching the end of the runway, what are your actions?
BARRIER ENGAGEMENT
Considerations:
- Take off emergency brief?
- Formation considerations?
- Other aircraft actions?
- Barrier contract?
- Barrier Speed?
Leader has the barrier unless formally hands it over, will have to leave the runway to avoid the lead, consider ejection.
- Wx overcast at 700ft and stacked to 8000ft, RW31.
Just after getting airbourne and gear has been selected up you get an APU caption.
What are your actions?
APU FIRE
Considerations:
- 5000 ft ensures time to eject should the tailplane control rods burn through resulting in full ND deflection
- Use the mirrors to monitor for signs of fire (Ejection posture/Neg G)
2 reports part of the right main wheel spraying out from under the right wing.
- Leading a pairs T/O RW13. At 135kts just after rotate you hear a loud bang and feel the ac shudder.
What are your actions?
BLOWN TYRE ON TAKE-OFF
- If continuing T/O don’t put gear and flaps up.
- NB directional control issues if aborting.
- Climb above cct height before inspecting systems.
LANDING WITH A BLOWN TYRE
- You are on the chocks having suffered two HUMS failures.
During the 3rd start you get a fire caption.
What are your actions?
ENGINE FAILURES AND FIRES ON THE GROUND
then EGRESS
- Make sure seat is safe
- Tell ATC & ground crew
- During a GH sortie to the North of IOM, you are recovering from a final turn stall when the FIRE caption illumintes.
What are your actions?
NB: The caption goes out after undertaking the correct bold face.
FIRE
Considerations:
- Land ASAP - Divert
- Probable hot gas leak
- Keep using the mirrors to monitor for signs of fire (ejection posture)
- You are lined up RW 31 and cleared for T/O.
You select full power and get a T6NL caption.
What are your actions?
Considerations:
- Consider taxying clear of RW if caption clears on throttling back
- NB use low throttle RPM
- EEC not scheduling top end of the envelope
Possible EGRESS
- If caption clears, shut down and vacate as normal
- During engine start you turn on your avionics and start trying to set up as much as you can due to walking late.
You notice T6 rising quickly and approaching max for start.
What are your actions?
HOT START ON GROUND
Considerations:
- Tailwind on start?
- Ask trade support for advice.
- Flying a strafe profile you get an OIL caption.
What are your actions?
Considerations:
- Recover the aircraft
- Late arm
- G may cause further damage vs MSD
OIL PRESSURE - Nearest divs: St Athan vs Cardiff
- During a go around at Hawarden you experience a strong vibration from the engine followed by abnormal indications.
What are your actions?
ABNORMAL ENGINE BEHAVIOUR
Considerations:
- Fly away vs landing on?
- Min prac = full power if climbing away
- Fixed RPM will reduce loading on engine
- You are at ML in the airspace North of Prestwick
You get a T6NL caption, what are your actions?
T6NL/MFC/EEC
Considerations:
- Throttle most likely at mid power setting when caption illuminated - cannot second guess under/overswing
- 100% doesn’t necessarily mean full throttle
- RTB vs Transit?
- Prestwick may be the best option if wx is fit
- You are perfoming MPMs when you hear a loud bang and “surge, surge”.
What are your actions?
NB: The engine doesn’t respond to your initial actions.
Considerations:
- Recover the ac
- Immediate relight
- Point in sensible direction
- Tell wingman
- RTB due to unknown cause of engine issue
- You are on a BINGO profile from LFA 14 at FL330 after a short detachment.
After a short time you begin to feel nauseous and become aware of a slightly euphoric feeling.
What are your actions?
OXYGEN/HYPOXIA
Considerations:
- Squawk emerg to expedite descent
- Any Oxy snag should be auto diagnosed by the system
- BUOXY duration?
