Emergency Landing Procedures Flashcards
If you experience a partial power loss, what options do you have?
Continue the flight in a reduced power condition so long as you can hold altitude or climb.
Initiate a forced landing and follow procedures in POH. Declare an emergency by radio.
What should you do if you experience an in-flight fire?
Follow procedures set up in the POH. Slip away from the fire. Declare an emergency by radio.
What action is advised if a door opens in flight?
Keep flying the airplane. Increase airspeed. Land when able and secure the door.
How can you counter a sudden, unexpected rolling motion following flap extension?
Return flaps to the up position. If in the traffic pattern for landing execute a go around return flaps to the up position and adjust speed and approach for landing.
Why should you avoid flap extension during turns in the traffic pattern?
So that if a split flap situation occurs the plane is not forced into a stall/spin.
What is the first action you should take when an engine failure occurs?
Maintain control of the airplane and adjust pitch to achieve best glide speed. Trim to relieve control pressure.
Scan terrain for suitable landing field within glide distance.
Turn toward intended landing field.
Follow appropriate emergency checklist and attempt to determine the cause of the power failure. Attempt to restart engine.
Set up landing approach.
What are some of the factors that you need to consider when selecting an appropriate field for an emergency landing?
Wind direction and speed
Length of the field
Obstructions
Surface condition
True/False. When making an emergency landing, it is recommended that you circle away from the field and then execute a long straight-in approach to the landing area.
False. If possible make a standard traffic pattern approach.
What code should you set in your transponder to indicate an emergency?
7700
Why should you wait to lower the flaps until you are confident of making the landing field?
So that you do not accidentally lose too much altitude and strike an obstruction.
