Where are the signals sent out by the notochord picked up?
Ectoderm
What do these signals do?
Signal the ectoderm to become thick and join the neuroplate
Where do the optic vesicles grow from?
Dienencphalic part of neural tube
What forms the lens placode?
Thickened cells on the surface of the ectoderm
What does the lens placode form?
Optic cup
What forms the choroid fissure?
Blood vessels that pass through the optic cup inferior wall
What happens if the fissure doesn’t get filled?
Coloboma - can be of the iris, retina or disc
Which layer of the retina grows quicker?
Inner layer
What is the space between the inner and outer layers of the retina?
Potential space
What can the potential space lead to?
Retinal detachement
What enters to cause retinal detachment?
Liquefied vitreous through holes in peripheral retina
What is mesenchyme derived from?
Mesoderm and neural crest cells
What does the surface ectoderm form?
Eyelids, conjunctiva, corneal epithelium
What does mesenchyme form?
Choroid, stroma of cornea, sclera and extra ocular muscles
What do lens fibres form?
Epithelium of lens vesicle
