Embodied interaction Flashcards
What is embodied interaction?
Interaction using non-verbal cues
What is communication accommodation theory?
People are convergent when showing liking and divergent when showing disliking
What is mirroring?
The mimicking of behaviour that occurs during conversation. Related to liking and agreeing
What did Bavelas, Black, Lemery and Mullett (1986) find?
> Frequency of imitation dependant on whether confederate looks at subject (3x)
Not automatic
How do we use embodiment in interaction?
> Define start and end of interactions > Levels of engagement > Roles > Relationship > Shared focus > Turn boundaries > Organisation of turn
What is the f-formation system?
An active maintained arrangement of people that frames an interaction and helps maintain focus
What are the components of the f-formation system?
> Each individual has a transactional segment (space)
Others normally respect this space
Framed by position and orientation
What is O-space?
A shared space of attention during conversation, usually orientated at 30 degrees
What are the different types of conversant orientation?
> Directly facing (confrontation, greeting)
L arrangement (cooperation)
Side-by-side (close friends)
What is the shape of f-formation dependant on?
> Number of ppts
Environment
Activity type
What are the effects of changes in interaction on f-formation?
New interaction is usually preceded by a sharp turn away from the direction the new orientation will take place
What are changes in f-formation associated with?
> Changes in ppt activity
Changes in topic
Changes in participants
What are the factors that impact turnover during improv sessions?
> Narrative expectations
> Contributions from positions on the circle
What is parallel engagement?
While dealing with one conversant, a speaker may enlist a third conversant and concurrently engage with them
