Write a few sentences to explain the role of the Privy Council.
- The Privy Council was a council made up of Elizabeth’s advisors and Elizabeth trusted them.
- They were responsible for the day to day running of the country.
- They had to be united.
Explain what was important about the problems Elizabeth faced at the beginning of her reign.
They would shape her as a monarch and would ensure that she would go on to become a trusted and stable Queen. Also, these problems would carry on for the entirety of her reign. The fact that these problems came at the beginning of her reign meant that she knew how to deal with them and what sort of problems they would take. Elizabeth knew what was coming and by having these problems, she knew what to expect and how to deal with the problems.
Why were people so keen for Elizabeth to marry?
- It would create an alliance with a foreign country.
- It would guarantee the loyalty of a powerful English family.
Explain what was important about Parliament during Elizabeth’s reign.
Parliament was seen by Elizabeth as unnecessary and inconvenient. This was important because it meant that Parliament didn’t have that much power and that Elizabeth could exert her power over Parliament.
Rank the causes of the Essex rebellion in order of importance.
1} Failures in Ireland because it meant that Essex had people on his side against Elizabeth. It meant that Ireland may have turned against Elizabeth.
2} Argument with Elizabeth because it meant that Essex would have fallen out of favour with Elizabeth meaning that she could use her system of Patronage against him.
3} Loss of monopoly and wealth because it meant that Essex wasn’t as powerful and wealthy as he once was.
Explain what was important about the Great Chain of Being in Elizabethan society.
It was important because it meant that the richer were getting richer and the poor were getting poorer.
