What do you think the phrase the boom means?
It means a surge in economic prosperity where employment is high, businesses are doing well and wages are high.
What is meant by the term isolationism?
It is where a country want to conduct themselves by themselves and not interfere with policies that they feel are not advantageous to them.
Explain how each consumer good has impacted a consumer’s life.
Cars: It meant that Americans could drive to parties and work rather than having to take other means of transport.
Telephones: This meant that Americans could connect with Americans in other parts of the country and also people in other parts of the world.
Radios: They could keep up with political issues.
Refrigerators: They could store their food.

Assembly line: A line where employees would mass produce products. They would all work on a set section.
Consumer goods: These were products that would apply to the everyday American.
Hire purchase: Consumers could pay for products in instalments.
Import duties: These are tariffs that are placed on goods entering the country.
Rugged individualism: This is a policy that was introduced by the American government which was where they would leave businesses and business alone and not interfere.

Other than Woodrow Wilson, they were all Republican.
Describe how Ford’s assembly line worked.
Every employee would work on a specific bit of the product.
Describe why American farmers suffered during the 1920s.
They suffered because of the decreased demand for American imports, overproduction and losing their produce.
What is meant by inequalities of wealth?
It is the unequal spread of wealth.
What was speculation?
Speculation was where you would invest in stocks.
Explain what is meant by the word craze.
A craze is a trend that is done by someone and replicated worldwide.
In what ways are sources d and e different?
Source D is positive and supportive of jazz music. He feels that black people are contributing heavily to the increased popularity of jazz music.
Source E is negative and does not support jazz music. The author feels that it is over-sexualised and that it is not appropriate.
What was the Hays Code and why was it needed?
The Hays Code was a set of regulations relating to film. It was needed because Americans were horrified at the nudity and sexual content of many of the films at the time.
How did the following make an impact on women’s lives?
- WW1.
- The Boom.
- WW1: Women began to take over the men’s jobs. They worked just as hard as men and they were earning money which gave them a sense of freedom and independence. They didn’t have to rely on their husbands and they could go out by themselves.
- The Boom:
This meant that women had more time to go out and they also had more freedom. They could dress in a liberating fashion and didn’t have to adhere to the stereotypes surrounding women at the time.

Prohibition: The banning of the sale, transportation and manufacture if alcohol.
Speakeasy: An illegal club where smuggled alcohol would be sold.
Bootlegger: People that would smuggle in alcohol from other countries.
Moonshine: A home-made spirit.
Why did immigrants see America as a land of opportunity?
They saw it as a place where they could live a prosperous life. They saw it as a place of opportunity and where they could live in better conditions. The American dream was a lure to immigrants as they saw America as a place of prosperity and success.

This is where a black person would be hung from a tree.
Jim Crow Laws:
These were laws that discriminated against black people in favour of white people.
NAACP:
This was an organisation that campaigned for equal rights.
Why do you think members of the KKK were able to get away with such violence without being punished?
They were able to get away with violence because in the organisations that would punish them, members were in the KKK therefore would turn a blind eye to it.
Why do you think the KKK were keen to associate themselves with American patriotism?
They were keen because they wanted to parade their version of America and how America should be according to them.
Why do you think there was a red scare in the early 1920s?
Americans were afraid of Communism as they saw it as a threat to their values.
What were Sacco and Vanzetti accused of?
They were accused of armed robbery and two counts of murder.
