Explain the difference between communism and capitalism in more than 50 words.
Communism is an ideology whereby everyone contributes to the state and there is one party control. Also, less emphasis is placed on business. Communists believe that the ordinary people should seize control from the rich and powerful. However, Capitalism is an ideology whereby people should be free to create their own business and make money for themselves.
Outline why there was so much mistrust between the USA and the Ussr in the years leading up to 1945.
America was convinced that the Ussr was trying to spread communism across the world meaning that they united with France and Britain. Also, the communists managed to maintain power despite the best efforts of Britain and France. Also, the Russians weren’t invited to the peace talks at the end of ww1 meaning that Russia resented other nations. Furthermore, in 1919 a suicide bomb arrived at the house of Mitchell Palmer who was in charge of the Department of Justice which further aroused American suspicion of the communists. To continue, Hitler was elected in 1939 and he was determined to destroy communism therefore meaning that the Russians took offence to this.
Define iron curtain and containment.
The iron curtain was the divide in which Europe was divided in 1945 between the communists who were on the Eastern side and the Capitalists on the Western side.
Containment: The policy whereby Henry Truman would contain the spread of communism.
Describe how the USA and the USSR differed over their attitude to Germany after WW2.
USSR:
They wanted to keep Germany weak and Stalin wanted to keep Soviet troops inside the Eastern European that he had invaded.
USA:
The USA felt that Germany should he helped in its recovery period and that they should be helped in their return to peace.
What were the dangers faced by the USA and the USSR if they had fought an actual war?
They may both have been severely bombed due to both countries’ nuclear power. There was a real fear of nuclear war over the world at the time.
What were the aims of the United Nations?
- To prevent and end wars.
- To improve living and working conditions.
- To improve health and human rights.
Who were Kim ill sung and Syngman Rhee?
Kim ill sung:
- He was the ruler of North Korea.
- He was a communist.
Syngman Rhee:
- He was elected president of Korea in 1919.
- He became the president of South Korea after WW2.
What is the security council of the UN?
It is a group that deals with issues relating to peace and security.
How did the UN become involved in a war in Korea?
The UN sent troops and supplies to defend against communism.
Why was the victory at the port of Inchon important for UN forces?
It was important because it meant that the UN was showing its force and that America was standing up against communism and fighting communism.
Define the following terms:
- stalemate.
- napalm.
- demilitarised zone.
- Stalemate: Where nothing is happening and the two sides are seeing the war out.
- Napalm: It is a chemical weapon.
- Demilitarised zone: An area where no fighting occurs.
What is meant by the term human cost of war?
Human cost is how many people approximately died in the war.

Ho Chi Minh:
He was a communist that wanted Vietnam to become free of French rule and become its own independent country.
Vietminh:
The Vietminh was a guerrilla group that wanted Vietnamese independence and was a communist group.
What were the consequences of the battle of Dien Bien Phu?
- The Vietnamese felt that a communist government was coming.
- The USA became more involved.
How did Diem secure control of South Vietnam?
He claimed that he won an election.
