Elements of Design Flashcards
State and explain the power horizontal lines have
- strong, restful and peaceful
- because objects parallel to the earth are at rest
State and explain the power diagonal lines have
- convey a feeling of movement
- unstable
- add dimension by indicating depth
- lead eye to space where lines converge
- because they’re neither horizontal or vertical
- they are about to fall or are already in motion
State and explain the power vertical lines have
- sense of height
- because they are perpendicular to the earth an extend upwards
State and explain the power horizon + vertical lines
- stability and solidity
- because of 90* angles
State and explain the power curved lines
- energy, sensual quality, softening
- they recall the curves of a human body
State the power of dotted lines
- implies moving lines across the page
What is form?
all things considering the height, depth and width of an object.
- the three-dimensionality of the object
- drawings use values to imply depth
What is shape?
- an area enclosed by line,
- only 2 dimensions
What is space?
the arrangement of objects on a picture plane
What is the role of linear perspective?
- the method of using lines to show the illusion of depth
- e.g one point perspective or two point perspective
What is value and how is it created? The effect?
- the range of lightness and darkness
- created by a light source that shines on an object
- creates depth making objects look 3D
What is texture?
- the surface quality of an object
- i.e real texture - actual texture
- implied texture - when a 2D object is made to have a certain texture
