Elements and Matter Flashcards
Element
A substance made out of a single type of atom
Atom
The smallest particle of an element
Compound
A substance made up of two or more elements that are chemically combined
Mixture
A combination of two or more substances that can be easily separated
Melting
Solid to liquid with energy gained
Evaporation
Liquid to gas with energy gained
Deposition
Gas to solid with energy lost
Sublimation
Solid to gas with energy gained
Freezing
Liquid to solid with energy lost
Condensation
Gas to liquid with energy lost
Liquid particles
Particles flow but remain close together, they have more energy solids and have strong bonds
Solid particles
Particles are tightly packed and vibrate, have low energy and are held in place by bonds.
Gas particles
Particles that move freely, bonds don’t hold them in place and they have high energy
Molecule
A substance made up of two or more atoms that are chemically combined. Can be either an element or a compound
Lattice
The arrangement of atoms into rows and columns
Gas properties
It is any matter that does not have a fixed shape or volume.
Solid Properties
Is any matter in a form that has a definite shape and volume.
Liquid Properties
It is any matter that has a definite volume but no definite shape.
Monoatomic Element
An element made up of only a single atom
Matter
It is anything that has mass and takes up space
Chemical Symbol
A one or two letter representation of an element
Atomic Mass
The number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom; the big number on a periodic table
Atomic Number
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom; the small number on a periodic table
Transition Metal
Block of metallic elements in the middle of the periodic table
