Electroplating Flashcards
Purpose
-used for a layer of material to bestow desired property (e.g abrasion and wear resistance, corrosion protection, lubricity, aesthetic qualities, etc.) to a surface that otherwise lacks the property.
purpose 2
-Some metals are recognized for their strength and their durability, while others are better known for their visual beauty
purpose 3
-when both qualities are desired, it is possible to coat a strong metal, such as gold or silver.
purpose 4
-another application uses electroplating to build up thickness on undersized parts
purpose 5
- it is used to economically change the physical appearance of substances
examples in manufacturing
- ) manufacture mirrors- plate with silvers (Sliver Lab- plating)
- ) jewelry and Watch- silver and gold plating
- ) silverware- silver plating
- ) machinery- strengthen flexible metals like steel with chromium, nickel, or copper
- ) electronics- to carry current and/or for corrosion resistance using nickel plating
- ) electronic circuits- gold plated
- ) engine bearing- plated with silver
- ) galvanized nails- nickel or zinc plating to prevent corrosion
- ) steel cans- plate with tin for better storage
- ) truck bumpers- strengthen flexible metals like steel with chromium, nickel, or copper
electroplating def
a process of depositing a thin layer of a fine and more superior metal (like chromium, zinc, nickel, gold, etc.) over the article of a base and cheap metal (like copper and iron), often to help with the electric current
things to remember while electroplating
- roughen the surface
- anode (acting as a cathode) you use to plate must already be in electrolytic bath (replenishing)
- object must be the anode for it to react
