How do you diagnose the elbow?

A

TART

  • Look and feel for asymmetry between the two elbows
  • Palpate for tissue/texture changes, tenderness
  • Range of motion:
  • Elbow Flexion - 140-150
  • Elbow Extension - 0 to -5
  • Elbow Pronation - 90
  • Elbow Supination - 90
  • Elbow Adduction - 5
  • Elbow Abduction - 5

Assess BILATERALLY

Determine which motion is restricted and diagnose

ABDUCTION/ADDUCTION/EXTENSION/FLEXION

How do you do a direct treatment of the elbow?

A

MET

Put pt into barrier, have then resist motion for 3-5 seconds

Find new barrier, repeat 3 times

Reassess

How do you do an indirect treatment of the elbow?

A

Grasp pt’s hand and elbow while seated.

Gently and slowly move to elbow into its position of laxity and apply compression between hands to facilitate laxity

Follow any tissue release until it is completed

Reassess
