effects of smoking Flashcards
1
Q
effects of smoking on circulatory system:
A
- smoking releases carbon monoxide
- carbon monoxide binds irreversibly to haemoglobin
- this means no oxygen can be transported to respiring cells
2
Q
coronary heart disease
A
- hearts blood supply gets blocked
- in coronary artery (which supplies heart muscle with blood)
- artery gets blocked by fatty deposits on wall of artery
-> lumen gets narrower
-> restricted blood flow -> not enough blood flow to the heart muscle cells
-> less O2 -> less aerobic respiration -> more anaerobic respiration -> more lactic acid -> poisons heart muscle cells -> heart attack
3
Q
what increases chances of CHD
A
- smoking
- saturated fats
- obesity
- inactivity
- high blood pressure
- pressure
- stress
