Marketisation
Increasing the amount of competition between schools in the British education system
Material deprivation
A lack of resources and money needed for educational success
Cultural deprivation
Lacking the values and attitudes necessary for educational success
Compensatory education
Supplementary educational programmes designed to compensate children for their deprived home background
Comprehensive education
System where schools are open to all children, regardless of their ability to pay, where they live or prior educational achievement
Ethnocentric curriculum
School curriculum based on the cultural norms, values, beliefs, and history of a single ethnic group
Self fulfilling prophecy
The tendency for people to behave as they are expected to behave
Meritocracy
A system in which success is based on individual ability or achievement
Cultural capital
The knowledge, habits, and tastes learned from parents and family that individuals can use to gain access to scarce and valuable resources in society
Social capital
The networks of relationships among people who live in a particular society, enabling that society to function effectively
Ideological state apparatus
Agencies of the state which serve to spread dominant ideology and justify the power of the dominant social class
Value consensus
General agreement across a society on what is important and worthwhile
Patriarchal ideology
The belief that men are superior to women and should control all important aspects of society
Vocationalism
The knowledge and skills required for specific types of employment
Hidden curriculum
Standards of behaviour that are deemed proper by society and are taught subtly in schools
