Education Flashcards
How did Weimar education differ from Imperialist Germany?
Schools moved away from traditional religiously focused study and adopted more child-friendly, individually oriented education with more equal opportunities for higher education.
What was cultural experimentation?
This was combining physical movements with learning and often focused on previously unsupported subjects such as performance art and artistic expression.
What subjects underwent Cultural experimentation?
Art, literature, architecture, design, and theatre.
How did the Nazis control what was being taught in schools?
All teachers loyal to the party had been put through a month-long courses that instructed them on the Nazi ideology and how to teach the new curriculum.
How was ‘History’ altered under the Nazis?
Children were taught the former glory of Germany and the Holy Roman Empire to emphasize the betrayal of the November Criminals
How was ‘Biology’ altered under the Nazis?
Children were taught the biological roles of men and women and the superiority of the Aryan Race.
How was ‘Literature’ altered under the Nazis?
There were German Nationalist stories that boasted about the honour and glory of Soldiers. In fairytales, the Nazi is always the protagonist and the Jew or the Communist was the antagonist.
One criticism of education in the FRG?
It received relatively little funding in the 50s and 60s because of the policies for post-war recovery. Supplies and resources for schools were limited.
Why was it hard to denazifiy education in the FRG?
There were very few ‘clean’ teachers so there was no choice but to hire the teachers that were associated with the Nazi party who were still teaching a Nazi curriculum.
One Criticism of education in the FRG?
It did not promote its own democratic system.
