What is an eating disorder?
Eating disorder: eating behaviours that are outside of the norm and are detrimental to health and wellbeing.
An eating disorder is a persistent distrubance of eating that impairs physical health and/or psychosocial functioning that is not secondary to any other medical or psychiatric disorder.
The diagnosable eating disorders according to the DSM 5 & ICD 10
The diagnosable eating disorders according to the DSM 5 & ICD 10:
* Anorexia Nervosa
* Bulimia Nervosa
* Binge Eating Disorder
* Other Specified Feeding and Eating Disorders
* Pica
* Rumination Disorder
* Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID)
* Other: Body Dysmporphia Disorder, Orthorexia Nervosa

* A term used to describe individuals that do not fall within strict diagnostic criteria.
* Treated by guidelines that relate as closely as possible to their symptoms/challenges
What is Anorexia Nervosa?

* characterized by: restriction of energy intake, intense fear of weight gain/obesity although underweight, disturbance of healthy body image: denial of current low body weight

Physical effects:
- Loss of subcutaneous fat tissue
- Orthostatic hypotension (low blood pressure when standing after sitting/laying down)
- Bradycardia (a slow heart rate)
- Impaired menstrual function
- Hair loss
- Hypothermia
Social effects:
- Inward-looking; self focused; predictability; routine;
- difficult to form relationships
- Eating alone
