Ecology Flashcards
Define biosphere
Places on earth where life is found
Define ecosystem
All living things plus any non-living factors
Define community
All different living things
Define condensation
Conversion of gas to liquid
Define population
Group of same species
Define evaporation
Conversion if liquid to gas
Define biome
Similar climate and communities
Define species
Group of living organisms that are alike and capable of exchanging genes
Define decomposers
Organism that decomposes organic matter
Define producers
CreTe their own food from the suns energy
Define transpiration
Evaporation out of plants
define consumers
Uses other existing organisms for food energy
Define autotrophs
Organism that makes nutrients from inorganic substances
Define heterotrophs
Organism deriving its nutritional requirements from complex organic substances
Define herbivores
Gets energy from plants only
Define runoff
The draining away of water
Define carnivores
Gets energy from meat only
Define ecology
Study of interaction between different species with non-living environment
Define omnivores
Gets energy from both plants and meat
Define biomass
Organic matter used as fuel
Define nitrogen fixation
Taking nitrogen from the atmosphere and turning it into ammonia
Define nitrification
Transformation of ammonia to nitrate
Define Denitrification
Nitrate reduction from atmosphere
Define Trophic level
Animals that share same function in food chain
What is a food chain?
Shows the flow of energy between animals and plants
What is a food web?
Shows who eats what
Why does only 10% of the energy make it to the next trophic level?
The other 90% is used when it dies and gives off heat and waste.
What is each part of the water cycle?
Precipitation, runoff, evaporation/transpiration, condensation then back to precipitation
What is each part of the carbon cycle?
Producers and consumers produce CO2 through cellular respiration, then when they die they become decomposers which become fossil fuels which then produce CO2
Why is nitrogen needed by living things?
Nitrogen is a part of amino acids and amino acids make protein which provides structure and enzymes so without nitrogen we wouldn’t have any of those things.
