Cellular Respiration Flashcards
How is a calorie different from a “Calorie”?
A food calorie is actually a kilocalorie or 1000 calories. A good calorie is 1000x greater than a CALORIE.
What is a calorie?
The energy needed to raise the temperature of one gram of water through 1°C
What is the first step in breaking down glucose called?
Hexokinase
What is the equation for cellular respiration?
Glucose+ oxygen–> carbon dioxide+ water+ energy
How many net ATP are made from glycolysis?
2 ATP
How is the function of NAD+ Similar to that of NADP+?
They can both be reduced to NADH and NADPH
Is oxygen used during glycolysis?
No
When oxygen is not present, what is the reaction classified as?
Anaerobic respiration
What kind of organisms can make alcohol out of glucose?
Anaerobic
How many ATP Are just made from fermentation?
Zero
How is most of the energy “locked up” in a glucose molecule?
When there is no oxygen present to carry it away
When oxygen is present, what is the reaction classified as?
Aerobic respiration
What is the next process after glycolysis if oxygen is present?
The Krebs Cycle
What is the first compound formed from pyruvic acid?
Citric acid
Why is the Krebs cycle also known as the citric acid cycle?
Citric acid is the first compound made in the cycle.
How many ATP are produced from the Krebs cycle per glucose?
36 ATP
Where do all the electron carriers go?
They go to make water H2O
Where does the ETC occur in the cell?
Mitochondria
Why is oxygen needed in the ETC?
It is the final electron carrier. It keeps back up of electrons occurring.
What do the H+ ions do to help generate ATP?
Goes through ATP synthase?
How many ATO are made from ETC?
32 ATP
What is the total amount of ATP made per glucose from all the steps of cellular respiration combined?
36 ATP
Define glycolysis
The breakdown of glucose by enzymes, releasing energy and pyruvic acids
Define NAD+
And electron carrier in glycolysis
