Ecology Flashcards
What is ecology?
Ecology is the study of the interaction between living organisms and their environment
Population
This is a group of organisms of the same species living in the same place at the same time and which are able to mate and produce offspring
Species
A group of organisms that share similar characteristics and can produce offspring that are are capable of reproducing
Community
All the organisms of all the different species living in the same habitat
Ecosystem
Consists of a community and its environment
Environment
Everything that surrounds an organism in an ecosystem. both the abiotic and biotic components contribute to the environment of an ecosystem
What is the frequency?
The number of times an organism occurs in a given number of quadrat
Percentage Frequencies
Percentage of the sample that the specie is found in
Formula for ‘percentage frequency’
number of time an organism occurs divided by the number of quadrat throw times 100
3/5x100=60%
What is the density
The density is a species mean number if individuals of the species in a given area
Formula for density
mean number of individuals of the species (average) divided y the area of the quadrat
example for density
A species has a total number of 133 individual organisms from 10 quadrat throw. Area of the quadrat 1m2
The average number of species: 133/10=13.3
Density: 13.3/1m2=13.3m2
Examples of Sample Techniques
Mark-Release-Recapture Line Transect Beating tray Pooter Pitfall Trap Tullgren Funnel Sweepnet Pondnet Bottle
Possible niche an organism can have within an ecosystem
Cows are produce
Lions eat other animals
Bees create honey
