Carbon Cycle Flashcards
What is the Carbon Cycle?
The Carbon Cycle shows how carbon atoms are passed from one organism to another and to their environment as they live, breathe, eat, die and decay
What are the five (5) processes of the Carbon Cycle?
Photosynthesis, Respiration, Decomposition, Fossilization, Combustion
What is Photosynthesis?
Carbon Dioxide is removed from the air green plants where it is used to make carbohydrates, proteins and fats
What is Respiration?
When plants and animals respire, carbon dioxide is returned to the atmosphere
What is Decomposition?
When plants and animals die, their bodies are broken down by decomposers, when decomposers break down these organisms, they release carbon dioxide back into the air
What is Fossilization?
These are formed from decaying organisms
What is Combustion?
When anything is burnt (both biotic or abiotic) carbon dioxide is released into to the atmosphere
What is Global Warming?
a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth’s atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, CFCs, and other pollutants.
What is the Green House effect?
the trapping of the sun’s warmth in a planet’s lower atmosphere, due to the greater transparency of the atmosphere to visible radiation from the sun than to infrared radiation emitted from the planet’s surface.
Examples of Green House gasses:
Carbon Dioxide
Nitrous Oxide
Methane
Water Vapor
Effects of Global Warming
Increased Wildfires
Hotter Temperature
Melting of ice caps
