Ecological Succession Flashcards
Succession
Process Where Organisms occupy a site and change its environmental conditions, gradually making way for another type of community
Successional Series
- Organic Matter
- Increase Soil Depth
- Improved Soil structure
- Decrease soil erosion
- Increase mineral Recycling
Organic Matter Accumulation
Released by plants and other organisms
Increase Soil Depth
Organic matter helps bind mineral matter together
Improved soil struture
Increase organic matter content and increase retention and drainage of water
Decrease soil erosion
Binding action of roots of larger plants
Increase Mineral recycling
More minerals present in soil and biomass
Primary Succession
Land without soil colonized by living organisms where none have existed before
Secondary Succession
New community develops from biological legacy of previous (occurs after a disturbances)
Pioneer Community
- Made up of resilient pioneer species
- Able to immigrate quickly and can survive harsh environments with few resources - Create pockets/crevices in rocks
- patches of organic matter accumulate, water is retained and soil is formed
