What is anorexia nervosa?
Restriction of food intake to reduce weight
Relied on compulsive compensatory behaviours when food cannot be avoided
What compulsory compensatory behaviours are used?
Self induced vomiting
Laxative abuse
Excessive exercise
Abuse of appetite suppressants/weight loss supplements
What are the physical signs and symptoms of anorexia nervosa?
Cold intolerance Constipation and bloating Amenorrhoea Dry skin Fainting Hypotension Bradycardia Scalp hair loss Weakness and fatigue Osteopenia and osteoporosis Short stature and delayed puberty
What is bulimia nervosa?
Episodes of binge eating with a sense of loss of control, followed by compensatory behaviour of purging or non purging type >2x a week for 3 months
What are purging behaviours?
Self induced vomiting
Laxative abuse
Diuretic abuse
What are non purging compensatory behaviours?
Excessive exercise
Fasting
Strict diet
What are the physical signs and symptoms of bulimia nervosa?
Mouth sores Renal issues Pharyngeal trauma Oesophageal tear Muscle cramps Weakness Bloody diarrhoea Irregular periods Fainting Swollen parotid glands Hypotension
What is binge eating disorder?
Similar to bulimia nervosa but absence of purging
What are the signs and symptoms of purge eating disorder?
Ongoing and/or repetitive cycles often including Unusually fast eating, often when alone Unusually large amounts consumed Uncomfortably full Embarrassment, guilt, shame, depression
What are the ways people avoid calorie intake?
Diets- veggie or vegan
Not touching food or grease
Developing dislikes, pickiness or “allergies”
Eating very slowly, or only at certain times
Avoiding parties or social situations
Spoiling or messing with food
Refusing to eat more than the person who eats least
Medication abuse
What are the ways people get rid of calories?
Self induced vomiting Chewing or spitting out Overexercise Overactivity Cooling Blood letting Medication abuse
What are the signs re body image of disordered eating?
Body checking
Visiting pro-ana welsites
Competing with self totobtain lower and lower goals
Deliberate self harm if images broken
What are the psychological consequences of eating disorders?
Reduced central coherence and narrowed focus of interest
Unable to interpret emotion
Depression, anxiety, obsessionally, loss of concentration
What are the social consequences of eating disorders?
Withdraw from friendships
Lose interest in sexual relationships
