What is Anorexia Nervosa?
Reduced energy intake than needed, leading to significantly low BW. They have intense fear of weight gain and act to prevent it. They have body shape disturbance and use their BW to evaluate their self-worth.
What are the 2 sub-types of AN?
Restricting and Binge-Purging
How do those with AN present?
Muscle wasting, brittle nails, thinning hair, abdominal bloating, poor blood circulation.
What are the systemic effects of AN?
Heart failure, hypothermia, mood disturbance, arrhythmia, bradycardia.
What is Bulimia Nervosa?
Repeated binge-eating episodes (once a week for 3m). Includes repeated efforts to compensate for the binge to prevent weight gain inc fasting, excessive exercise, purging. They use their BW to evaluate their self-worth.
How does those with BN present?
Russell’s sign, lymph node and salivary gland enlargement, sore throat, gastric reflux / rupture.
What are the systemic effects of BN?
Self harm, muscle weakness, hypotension, memory problems, dehydration.
What is ARFID?
An eating / food disturbance (eg lack of interest in eating due to the sensory characteristics of food) as manifested by persistent failure to meet appropriate nutritional and energy needs associated with…
- sig low BW
- sig nutritional deficiency
- dependent on tube feeding
- Interference with psychosocial functioning.
What is BED?
Repeated binge-eating episodes (once a week for 3m). Doesn’t use any compensatory behaviours.
Is ARFID linked to body/shape evaluation?
No.
What has to apply to be diagnosed with BED?
They tend to eat faster than normal, eat until uncomfortably full, feel disgusted, guilty or depressed afterwards, eats alone due to embarrassment, eats without feeling physically hungry.
What are the signs / effects of BED?
Gastric rupture, mood disturbances, self-harm, factors ass with clinical obesity (cancer, CVD, hypertension)
What is OSFED?
Other-specified feeding and eating disorder
What is an unspecified feeding and eating disorder?
It causes significant distress / impairment in social, occupational areas of functioning. But it doesn’t meet the full criteria of any ED.
